“I can do push-ups now!” exclaims Laura Meyer, a member of the Michiana Family YMCA.
She just came from her early morning cross training class. Laura is the model of health: a runner, a swimmer, a nurse, and a mother of five. But strength training has kicked her overall fitness to a whole new level. “I could only do five push-ups before.”
And Meyer isn’t alone. At 5:50 am, the class had participants ranging in age from 14-57, men and women, including a mother and her teenage son.
Resistance training is the fastest growing trend in fitness. And the benefits are numerous.
“You can improve your overall health just by watching your weight and taking walks in the neighborhood,” says Jeffrey Potteiger, dean of graduate studies at Grand Valley State University near Grand Rapids, Michigan (in an article published in The South Bend Tribune Business Weekly this week.) “But if you want to improve your fitness – look better, maximize health, have more energy, prevent injuries – you need to do more.”
Dr. Potteiger has spent 24 years studying how physical activity and nutrition influence health and disease and the role of exercise and dietary intake on the use of carbohydrates and fats by the body.
Resistance training can build muscles that you use for everyday tasks, helping you to avoid injury. Building muscle mass and reducing body fat has been linked to preventing the reoccurrence of cancer in patients, as well as reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as osteoporosis, heart disease and diabetes and alleviate depression.
We know that it takes courage to take your first strength training class, especially for women and older adults. Understanding how to increase your overall strength can be daunting.
At the Y, we offer strength training classes every day, at a variety of times. Try one or two out to find the best fit for you. Our instructors and participants will encourage you to keep at it and help to motivate you to do more. And, when you are a member, these classes are free! (Spinning classes incur an additional fee.)
If group fitness classes are not your thing, we offer personal training packages to meet your needs. All our personal trainers hold nationally-recognized certification. Our personal trainers focus on your individual goals and provide a safe, effective and well-structured workout to help you achieve them, with care and respect.

Laura and other members of that early morning class are talking about their first marathon next spring. Weightlifting helps them feel stronger with each workout. And they carry that strength into their everyday tasks.
That is how the Y is helping our community grow stronger.
